Dear Representative/Senator ________________,
The relationship a caring grandparent has with their grandchildren is crucial for the wellbeing of both grandparent and grandchild. Unfortunately, more and more adult children are choosing to cut off their parents’ communication with their grandchildren, sometimes for the most trivial of reasons, no matter how much time, effort, and financial support a grandparent has invested in the grandchild’s life. Our current state laws do not afford grandparents the legal protections they deserve to be able to petition a court for restoration of visitation with their grandchildren. Consider the laws in states such as Alaska, Arkansas, Maryland, Montana (and soon Indiana), which provide for a grandparent’s legal standing to petition a court for visitation in broader scenarios than our own state. Please work to change our state’s laws to allow greater ability for grandparents to petition the courts for visitation with their grandchildren, regardless of the circumstances. Thank you for your help in this matter.
Sincerely,
